Monster Releases Philadelphia Employment Outlook

MAYNARD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 2004--
Philadelphia Sees Rise in Job Opportunities in Sales; Information Technology; Accounting/Auditing; and Administrative/Support Services

A mirror to the country's workforce, Philadelphia's unemployment rate held steady at 5.5 percent in July - posting a significantly lower rate compared to a year earlier (5.9 percent in July 2003). Meanwhile, the nation's unemployment rate decreased slightly to 5.4 percent last month, and Philadelphians are noticing the signs of a market recovery. Underlining this hope for more than 147,000 unemployed workers in Philadelphia, Monster® today released employment data revealing a 51 percent increase in the number of local job postings compared to a year earlier. Monster is the leading global online careers property and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNST).

Where are the jobs?

Based on a comprehensive analysis of Philadelphia-based job postings on Monster, Sales opportunities are most abundant, with a 31 percent increase from August 2003 to August 2004. Other top job categories in terms of overall job postings include Information Technology (up 68 percent from last year), Accounting and Auditing (up 46 percent) and Administrative and Support Services (up 27 percent).

What types of candidates are employers seeking?

Thirty-five percent of job postings target employees at "mid-career." Thirteen percent of jobs are available at the entry-level, while ten percent are looking for job seekers with management experience. Additionally, 23 percent of Philadelphia postings target Monster job seeker members with bachelor's degrees.

What industries are attracting job seekers?

From 2003 to 2004, the total number of resumes posted in August on Monster for jobs in Philadelphia has risen by seven percent; and nearly 33,000 job seekers are willing to locate to the city, listing the area as a target location. Top resume categories include:

1. Administrative and Support Services

2. Customer Service and Call Center

3. Information Technology

4. Advertising/Marketing/Public Relations

5. Sales

How can Philadelphia job seekers improve their search?

Whether currently unemployed or looking to make a career change, the following are important tips for job seekers as they undergo the search and interview process:

-- Cast a Wide Net - The sooner you start creating a network, the faster you'll progress in your career. You never know where you'll meet someone interesting or hear about a great job opportunity.

-- Develop an Elevator Pitch about Yourself - Whether you're casually networking or in a formal interview, always be prepared with a crisp, concise, two-minute response to the question, "Tell me about yourself."

-- Be Prepared - Knowledge is power, and power gives you confidence - something you'll need to succeed in interviews. Research companies, industries and positions. Visit employers' websites.

-- Practice Good Nonverbal Communication - Demonstrate confidence: stand straight, make eye contact, listen and connect with a good, firm handshake.

-- Ask Questions - Demonstrate an interest in what goes on in the company. Asking questions also gives you the opportunity to find out if it is the right place for you.

-- Don't Appear Desperate - Maintain the three "C's" during an interview: cool, calm and confident. You know you can do the job; make sure the interviewer believes you can, too.
